Ghosh Letter to Administrators of Commonwealth Writers Prize
In March, Indian writer Amitav Ghosh, a Brooklyn resident, has announced his withdrawal from Commonwealth Writers Prize Competition in the following open letter. Ghosh had been named a regional winner for "The Glass Palace," an eye-opening 450-page story set in colonial Burma. The New York Times reported his withdrawal in a small article, but the news is still unknown in Japan. I have been sharing my translation with Japanese readers, upon the author's approval, because I feel he has made valuable points for us Asians in dealing with the English language and the Western culture. I hope you'll read and circulate this letter. (Yuko Ohnaka/May 28, 2001)
