At Dawn We Slept : The Untold Story of Pearl Harbor by Gordon William Prange, Donald M. Goldstein, Katherine V. Dillon

Viking Penguin/$20.95 (2001)

A Japanese translated version was published by Kodansha in 1987 and is still available.
Based on 37 years of massive research and countless interviews by Gordon William Prange, this is a landmark study of Pearl Harbor, first published in 1981, and arguably the best book on the subject. The recently published 60th anniversary edition has a new chapter by Goldstein and Dillon. "At Dawn We Slept “reconstructs the Japanese attack, from its conception to its lightning execution; and it reveals the true reason for the American debacle: the insurmountable disbelief in the Japanese threat that kept America from heeding advance warning and caused leaders to ignore evidence submitted by (their) own intelligence sources.” (Quoted from the back cover of the 50th anniversary edition).
